Tips for Planning Family Photos
I didn’t truly see the value in planning family photos until we had Ford. Now, time seems to go so fast and he’s constantly growing and changing which makes me want to capture every stage. I knew without a doubt that we would do family photos this fall to capture this time and to include for holiday cards! Truthfully, I didn’t send out holiday cards last year but am making it a priority this year.
My husband despises photo sessions but it’s easier to convince him to go along with it when I set up everything! I thought I would share my planning tips and some advice to make your session go smoothly. Of course, I highly suggest working with a photographer that you can trust to execute your vision. I ended up going with a new photographer in KC this year and was blown away by the results! Thanks, Kelsey!
How to Find the Right Photographer
Ask your friends: I love to ask my friends about their experience with family photographers. Were they happy with the experience? What did they like about the photographer? Etc. Good photos take work and a professional that not only can be flexible, but helpful when it comes to creative direction.
Check social media: Post in your mom groups on Facebook, search local hashtags, stalk your favorite influencers/friends that have shared their images, etc. Once you find a few that interset you, look at their portfolio and see if their photos fit your style and the look you want. You could also crowdsource on your social media to request favorite photographers from your friends!
Once you have found the right photographer…be sure to give clear direction on your vision and any key information. For us, time is super limited right now but we wanted a beautiful image and unique background. I asked our photographer if we could shoot in our backyard as an option. That way, we could just run outside to get the shots and be done! Luckily, our photographer was very open to that idea and went with the flow. I know some photographers prefer to scout and select the location, which is a great option if you fully trust their style! For me, I like to have a bit more creative control (suprise, surprise!)
Tips for a Successful Photo Shoot
Pick an outfit for everyone that they will comfortable and confident in! Don’t try to be too trendy…I ended up wearing a dress I already owned and loved and pulled outfits for everyone else based off that. I think the timeless outfits are the way to go overall. Trends will come and go and you don’t want to look back on photos and question your outfits! Less is more when it comes to your outfits. Make sure the silhouettes are flattering and will photograph well. Test out your outfits in advance by having someone take a few phone photos.
Style your hair/makeup as you normally would for a nice occassion. I do like to have a bit more fun with my makeup for holiday shoots and will add a bright red or berry lipstick to add in color!
Don’t try to overally stage anything. I don’t like to bring in lots of props/accessories. Make it about the family and you all interacting and having a good time. If there is ONE prop you can incorporate to add style/fun, just stick with that. In previous years, I brought in a wreath and we acted as though we were holiday shopping. It was simple, but made it fun!
Make sure everyone is fed in advance. No one wants to be hungry during a photo shoot. And you don’t want to worry about snacks when everyone is dressed in their best! If a snack is needed, make sure it’s something that won’t crumble or stain like puffs!
Talk to your photographer for a few minutes when you first meet to share any directives. Is there an angle you don’t like of yourself? Do you not like ‘kissing’ photos? What are the little things that will make you uncomfortable or you want to stay away from? I also will ask questions during the session of my photographer when I need help with a pose/angle/etc. If they are good, they should speak up and help you look your best!
